Judith Halberstams chapter discusses societys views about relationships, sexuality, and identity. The novel, George, displays these themes within the novel, and discusses what it means to be transgender while also addressing the issue of bullying. Representation of transgender children is important in literature, so that children can see themselves in the books that theyre reading and also develop greater understanding of queer identities. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop explains that when children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part. Our classrooms need to be places where all the children from all the cultures that make up the salad bowl of American society can find their mirrors (Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors 2). How might we use this book in a classroom setting, or to explain and further create empathy and understanding of queer identities?
